Drunken Driver Crackdown
Drive Sober Campaign Starts Next Week
To combat drunken driving, The Madison Police Department will join other law enforcement agencies throughout Wisconsin participating in the “Drive Sober Winter” national campaign from December 18, 2015 to January 3, 2016.
“Although drunken driving is 100 % preventable, on average someone is killed or injured in an alcohol related crash in Wisconsin every three hours” says Lt. Trevor Knight in the Traffic and Specialized Services Unit. During the “Drive Sober Winter “crackdown campaign, our officers will be out in force to arrest drunk drivers before they kill or injure themselves or an innocent victim. In addition, officers will also be enforcing safety belt violations.
Rather than risk a drunken driving arrest or crash, the Madison Police Department urges you to follow these common sense suggestions:
- Choose a sober designated driver before you start driving
- Make sure you Buckle Up.
- If you feel buzzed, you likely are over the 0.08 BAC limit and should not drive
- Take mass transit, shared rides, or taxicab instead of driving
- The Zero in Wisconsin traffic safety program has a free “Drive Sober” mobile app that can be downloaded by visiting zeroinwisconsin.gov
- There are taverns and restaurants that have programs to provide patrons with a safe ride home. Visit www.tlw.org and click on Safe Ride
- Report Impaired drivers to law enforcement by calling 911
