Effective Sunday, January 31, 2016

Chris Schmidt, District 11 Alderperson, announced today that he will resign his seat on the Madison Common Council effective January 31, 2016.

Ald. Schmidt stated, “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as District 11 Alder for nearly seven years.  Circumstances in my professional life have changed since I filed for re-election last fall, and my career in satellite meteorology requires my full attention.  Serving the City as Alder, itself a full-time job, has been very important to me, but being Alder is not my livelihood, and my livelihood must come first.”

Alderperson Schmidt was first elected to the Madison Common Council in 2009 and served as Common Council President in 2013 and 2014. During his tenure he has served on numerous committees including the Ad Hoc Landmarks Ordinance Review Committee, Board of Estimates, Transit & Parking Commission and the Common Council Organizational Committee.

He stated, “I am proud of the good work we've accomplished during my tenure.  Rewriting the TIF policy and the Landmarks Ordinance were major accomplishments, and there were many other challenges large and small that we overcame as well."
