Successful candidates to receive paid classroom instruction and on-the-job experience

The City of Madison Engineering Division is implementing a pilot solar job training program to prepare program participants for employment opportunities in the growing solar energy industry.

Applications are now being accepted through February 14, via the City’s website:  www.cityofmadison.com/jobs.

Up to 30 candidates will be invited to attend a non-paid informational and testing session on March 1, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Madison College, 2238 South Park St.  The test results will then be factored into candidate’s scores to rank candidates.

The top 15 candidates will be invited to attend a paid 3-day solar training March 28 to March 30, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Training will be held at the Engineering Operations Facility, 1600 Emil St.  All candidates who attend all scheduled hours of training will receive a $250 stipend for their participation.

Final interviews will be conducted on March 31 and April 1.  The top two candidates will be hired as hourly Solar Installer Trainees in the Engineering Division and work on a number of solar installations at various City facilities from mid-April through mid-October.

Robert Phillips, City Engineer, said the pilot program offers an exciting opportunity for job training and investing in City facilities.

“Program participants will gain exposure and experience in a new career field while helping to increase the City’s generation of renewable energy and decrease the City’s carbon footprint.”

The US Department of Labor reports employment of solar photovoltaic (PV) installers is projected to grow 24% from 2014 to 2024, which is faster than the average for all occupations.  Qualified individuals, particularly those who complete a photovoltaic training course at a community college or technical school, will have good job prospects.  The median annual wage for solar photovoltaic installers is approximately $40,020 (May 2014 data).
