Heat Related Precautions

posted

An excessive heat watch has been issued for the Madison and Dane County area from 7am Thursday, July 21st until 7pm on Friday, July 22nd.

Numerous organizations and agencies are providing precautionary information to keep in mind during this dangerous stretch of heat.  That is appropriate because on days like this, we all need to look out for those who may need assistance.

In the City of Madison, we do not open specific cooling centers, because our libraries, senior centers, and Warner Park Community Center are open and available.  Additional options are also available.

Bethel Homeless Support Services is open on Thursday from 8:30-4.  An air-conditioned space is available for those who need to escape the heat.  Other services include support services and spiritual support.  Bethel Lutheran Church is located at 312 Wisconsin Ave., downtown Madison and can be reached at 608.257.3577.

First United Methodist Church is providing special cooling hours on Thursday and Friday from 10am to 6:30pm.  Water and food will also be provided.  First United Methodist Church is located at 203 Wisconsin Ave., downtown Madison and can be reached at 608.256.9061.

The Dane County Humane Society is offering temporary cooling shelter for the pets of individuals who are homeless.  Please call ahead if possible to make arrangements at 608.838.0413.  The Dane County Humane Society is located at 5132 Voges Rd, in Madison.

The YMCA facilities on both the east and west side are open as cooling zones.

Information on additional resources (Hospitality House, Porch light Van, Central Library, State Capitol) can be found online through the homeless resource guide at: https://www.danecountyhumanservices.org/eaws/hl_res.aspx, or by calling United Way 2-1-1.

During this excessive heat alert, it is even more important that we check on our friends and neighbors who may be in need.  The elderly and those without air conditioning are particularly vulnerable.
