MPD delivering turkey baskets Sunday
“Turkey Transfer” to serve 120 families
MPD neighborhood officers are looking forward to joining forces with community volunteers Sunday as they go door to door delivering more than 120 turkey baskets to needy families. Caring staff members at the Goodman Community Center are helping coordinate the massive effort.
The “Turkey Transfer” began two years ago after officers noticed many neighborhood residents were not able to participate in the annual Turkey Basket Drive offered by the Goodman Community Center.
Baskets containing a turkey, many sides - even a roasting pan and ice cream - are very much appreciated by deserving families. However, in order to receive baskets, people must be able to travel to the Goodman Community Center’s north side location, which can be difficult for those with transportation challenges.
With “Turkey Transfer” the MPD’s Property Room van converts to a holiday dinner express, transporting baskets to wherever they are needed. Officers also use personal pickup trucks, sometimes even one of the MPD’s arrest vans, to get the good deeds done.
Officers involved this year include neighborhood officers Kim Alan and Scott Beckfield, Patrol Officer John Christian, Neighborhood Resource Officers Amelia Levett and Theresa Magyera. The MPD’s Police Explorers are also stepping up. Joining us will be parishioners from several churches, as well as other community volunteers.
