Central Library Public Stairs Closed for Replacement; Library to Remain Open During Construction

posted

Madison Public Library’s Central Library public staircase will be closed for replacement from January 30 to February 13, 2017.  The library will remain open regular hours throughout the construction and an alternative stairway will be opened for public access.

The following may be affected by stairs closure:

  • Meetings hosted in meeting rooms 104 and 201 may experience more noise or activity outside meeting rooms doors due to rerouted foot traffic.
  • Customers may experience increased wait times for the public elevator.
  • Customers entering the library at the Mifflin Street entrance on the Ground floor will be required to use the elevator to reach the first through third floors and may need to use the elevator to reach the Children’s Room during some times.  Visitors to The Bubbler and the Ground Floor circulation desk will experience more construction traffic.
  • Visitors to the Central Library Children’s Room will be affected by some shorter closures of the stairs to the Children’s Room.
  • Self check stations on the second floor will be temporarily removed.
  • Increased noise throughout the building during the construction period.
This project is a warranty partnership with all the original participants in the staircase installation: American Artstone, which manufactures the treads; JH Findorff, the installer; MS&R, the designer; City Engineering, which is managing the project on behalf of Madison Public Library; and Library facilities staff.  We regret this inconvenience and will strive to make the disruption experienced by library visitors as minimal as possible during the construction.
