Share the Word Event Brings Local Writing Community Together

Share the Word is a gathering of Madison-area poets, writers, spoken word performers, hip hop artists, and storytellers that will bring the Madison writing community together to share ideas, showcase their works, and spawn innovative collaborations. The free event takes place on Friday, May 5, 2017 5:00pm - 7:30pm at the Central Library, 201 W. Paul Weigel, a local poet and owner of Fox River Poetry Company, is dedicated to providing quality, customized poems made for you. All you need to do is provide some information to start with and we take it from there. Paul can write a customized poem for you about a childhood memory, a special person or place, or a concept or idea you value.
Dana Maya will have a Spontaneous Writing Booth set up for writers/poets to participate in. Dana is originally from Colorado, has family roots in Mexico, and has lived for the last eleven years on an isthmus in Madison, Wisconsin. You can find her reading her work in multimedia collaborations, teaching at Madison College, and writing at the Spontaneous Writing Booth.
Golpe Tierrawill perform acoustic music. Golpe Tierra, which in Spanish means "beating the earth", bases its sound on just that philosophy. When we all come together to beat the earth with our feet and hands we are truly celebrating the act of community. Golpe Tierra utilizes the traditional Afro Peruvian guitar-bass-cajón setup and embark on a musical journey throughout Latin-America flirting with shades of soul and jazz.

ROB DZ will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Rob Dz combines elements of jazz, R&B, funk and gospel with talented wordsmithing to make a sound unlike any other in music. Dz has rocked with Nas, Common, Talib Kweli, Blackalicious, Black Eyed Peas, Murs, Kids in the Hall, Wale, Rhymefest, Twista, The Dave Matthews Band, Zion I, Atmosphere, Pigeon John, Crown City Rockers, Immortal Technique, Naughty by Nature, Bone Thugs and Harmony, N.O.R.E, Afroman, and others. He appeared on ESPN's MIDNIGHT MADNESS SPECIAL at George Mason University as well being selected as a national semi-finalist on MTV's ULTIMATE HIP HOP TALENT SEARCH. He recently was named Spoken Word/Poet of The Year by Madison Magazine as well as Best Of Hip Hop by Isthmus Magazine.
Buggin Malone's musical writings and production are reflections of his life experiences, his passions, and his philosophy on life. While very proud of being Oneida, he never fails to forget that he is of blended tribes, Prairie Band Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk, and Stockbridge-Munsee. Buggin Malone was born as Wayne Malone, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He grew up on the Eastside of Milwaukee, and struggled with gang activities throughout his early years. These troubles led him to being incarcerated as a teen. That is when he realized he had the ability to write. Ten years later he released his first CD, titled "Birth of a Warrior", which earned him three award nominations: the Native American Music Awards, and the Indian Summer Music Awards and Just Plain Folks Music Awards.
Fabu Phillis Carter, professionally known as Fabu, was appointed Madison’s Poet Laureate in 2008 and served in that position until 2011. She was chosen for this honorary position by Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and voted in to office by the Madison Arts Commission in recognition of her years as a major figure in Madison’s literary arts movement.
Australian-born Katrin Talbot has published two chapbooks, including Freeze-Dried Love (Finishing Line Press), and St. Cecilia’s Daze (Parallel Press). A song cycle based on her poetry will be premiered in Toronto this year and she was Poet-in-Residence for Sound Ensemble Wisconsin last season. She has recently been nominated for two Pushcart Prizes in Poetry. She is a violist in the Madison Symphony Orchestra and once received enough prize money from a national poetry contest to fund a Dairy Queen run.
Oscar Mireleshas been Executive Director for Omega School for over 23 years. He is also the Poet Laureate for the City of Madison (2016-2018). In 2016, Oscar Mireles was recognized by In Business Magazine as one of the “15 Most Influential People in Dane County”, selected to the “M” List by Madison Magazine, and acknowledged by Madison365.com as one of “the 48 most powerful Latinos in Wisconsin”.
The Share the Word Library Takeover team includes Oscar Mireles, Diana Gonzalez, Joey Phelps and Zora Beach. Library Takeover was designed to encourage the community to TAKEOVER the library by providing space, time, and resources for community members to host their own events, helping to set the stage for future library programming that involves and reflects all of Madison. Library Takeover was funded through a grant from the Madison Public Library Foundation and managed by Madison Public Library.
