Threading Memories
Library to Host Memory Cloths Circle Workshops
Madison, WI –
Explore the threads that bind your life story. Throughout the month of July, you can learn how to translate your personal memories to textile art in a number of free workshops hosted by the Memory Cloth Circle at the Madison Public Library.
The Memory Cloth Circle evolved from the 2013 MMOCA Triennial as a Relational Art project at Lakeside Coffee House. People were invited to tell stories and embroider their memories. It was fun and meaningful, so the group has continued ever since. At various exhibits they provide materials and invite people to join in the process. Their inspiration comes from a group named Amazwi Abesifazane (meaning Voices of Women) which started making Memory Cloths in South Africa to give voice to their experiences of Apartheid.
You can learn to embroider your own memory cloth at one of many free workshops hosted by members of the Memory Cloth Circle as part of the Madison Public Library’s Bubbler program. Workshops are held in the Bubbler Room of the Central Library. All materials and supplies will be provided. No registration is needed, and all ages and abilities welcome.
