Mayor Soglin Supports Assistance for Furloughed Federal Employees

Madison Mayor Paul Soglin is thanking local lending institutions for the work they are doing with furloughed federal employees, encouraging them to do more if needed, and suggesting those employees reach out to their bank or credit union if they have not already done so.

"We know many of our banks and credit unions are working directly with customers who are affected by the shut down and I think that is wonderful," said Mayor Soglin. "A face-to-face meeting to talk about a possible loan deferment or extension of a line of credit is something that could be really helpful. I know our local businesses are very interested in helping our families in need. City Staff have been reaching out to our local lenders and we are encouraging them to provide federal workers with appropriate interest free loans."

"There have been some really creative initiatives around the country to help these individuals and families, and I am interested in local ideas as well. In fact, our local Muslim community has raised money for loans for affected workers," Soglin continued. "If people have ideas on how we as a City, and as friends and neighbors can assist, call or email my office. I would love to hear from you. I am also encouraging the entire community to make an extra donation to our local food pantries. Our federal workers may be utilizing these facilities."

"In addition, there may be additional shortages if the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps, and Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) families see an interruption of benefits," Soglin said. "We as a community, need to be ready to support them."
