Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway: ‘Serious Social Change is Needed in our Nation’

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway was joined this evening by a number of City Alders and Community leaders in denouncing tonight’s violence and destruction on State Street and downtown Madison.
“George Floyd should be alive tonight and the fact that he isn’t, is an American tragedy, said Mayor Rhodes-Conway, I also want to say that I completely agree with the protestors that were around the capitol square and right here in front of this building earlier today. I agree with their message, I agree with their right to protest and I agree with how determinedly and peacefully they protested today.”
Mayor Rhodes-Conway was joined by Council President Sheri Carter who stated” I ask that you go home tonight and think about George Floyd and think about George Floyd’s family, because that is where our heard and minds need to be.”
Mayor Rhodes-Conway stated, “Sadly, tonight,” when the organized event dispersed, a relatively small number of individuals what I believe were more interested in trouble than protest, remained behind and began a course of property damage in the downtown area.
Other speakers tonight included Alders Shiva Bidar, Samba Baldeh, State Representative Chris Taylor and Interim Police Chief Vic Wahl. City Alders Furman, Heck and Lemmer and United Way President Renee Moe also joined them.
