Madison Public Library’s Dream Bus Announces Summer Schedule
posted
MADISON, WI -- Madison Public Library’s mobile library the Dream Bus will begin its summer schedule on Tuesday, June 21.
Throughout the year, the Dream Bus visits a dozen stops across the city that have traditionally faced transportation barriers in accessing library services. From June-August, the Dream Bus will also attend a handful of community events, bringing books and activities. Events include Parks Alive! events, Mobile Madison, a Forward Madison soccer game, neighborhood festivals and more.
“The Dream Bus has had a busy school year with many visits onboard and library cards issued,” said Tracy Herold, Director of Dane County Library Services. “As we begin our summer schedule this year, we have expanded our capacity to be able to attend more events in the community. This will allow us to continue meeting people where they’re at and combating transportation barriers in accessing library service.”
When attending community events this summer, the Dream Bus drivers will be accompanied by a maker intern who will ride along on the bus and provide programs and activities for kids and families to enjoy. The first activity offered this summer is a bookmaking program that aligns with the We Read summer kick-off happening in Madison Public Libraries this month. Kids and families can make their own book and fill it with materials they have read over the summer, write out their to-read list, draw their favorite characters, or any other creative ways to engage with - and celebrate - reading of all kinds.
“We’re excited to offer Dream Bus visitors a variety of cool, innovative maker projects throughout the summer thanks to the addition of the maker intern,” said Herold. “Families will be able to spend more time on the bus, building relationships, browsing books and learning about library services.”
Visitors to the Dream Bus can apply for a library card, check out and return books, or place and pick up holds. The Dream Bus is home to 2700+ books, DVDs and other materials with topics ranging from adult nonfiction to Spanish children’s books and everything in between. About the Dream Bus
The Dream Bus began delivering service in April of 2019. Madison Public Library, in partnership with Dane County Library Service and Madison Public Library Foundation, recognized that many Madison-area communities experienced barriers to accessing library services. The Dream Bus is a joint effort by all three organizations to alleviate those barriers.
About Dane County Library Service
Dane County Library Service delivers library service to County residents not served by traditional libraries. DCLS offers Outreach Services for homebound patrons and those in senior living and daycare facilities; mobile library services through the Dream Bus and Bookmobile; a 45,000 item collection shared throughout Dane County; and contracts between libraries for shared service.
