Upcoming Atwood Avenue Traffic Switch Happening May 24
(MADISON, Wis.)—A traffic switch will take place on the Atwood Avenue reconstruction project beginning Wednesday, May 24, 2023.
Traffic will continue to be restricted to one northbound lane on Atwood Avenue between Cottage Grove Road and Oakridge Avenue/Sugar Avenue, but motorists traveling between Cottage Grove Road and Dennett Drive will be shifted to the new lane along the lake side of Atwood Avenue. Traffic will then weave back over to the existing lane on the opposite side of the street from Dennett Drive to Fair Oaks Avenue.
“This next traffic switch will allow the project team to construct new infrastructure on the inbound side of Atwood Avenue from Cottage Grove Road to Dennett Drive,” City of Madison Project Manager Andrew Zwieg said. “We appreciate everyone’s continued patience as we move through the construction process.”
Access to side streets such as Dennett Drive, Margaret Street and Olbrich Avenue will remain open, except during specific times when sanitary work is being done. Motorists should expect additional side street closures in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, the southbound lanes of Atwood Avenue between Fair Oaks Avenue and Oakridge Avenue/Sugar Avenue may be used for local traffic only.
Pedestrians traveling toward Olbrich Park from Cottage Grove Road should plan to use the new sidewalk on the lake side of Atwood Avenue. Meanwhile, pedestrians coming from Fair Oaks Avenue should continue to use the sidewalk on the north side of the street. There will be a crossing point at the existing temporary walkway located just east of Walter Street. Pedestrians may also use the crosswalk on the north/west side of Dennett Drive, the south/east side crosswalk on Olbrich Avenue and the north crosswalk on Cottage Grove Road.
Lastly, MG&E will be working in the project area, and Metro Transit will have temporary bus stops near Walter Street, Margaret Street and Cottage Grove Road.
The entire project is slated to be completed by the fall of 2023.
