August Moving Days: How to Use the Large Item Work Order System during the Move Out

posted

Starting the week of August 4, 2024 and ending on Friday, August 23 2024, the large item work order rules are different for residents who live in the student move-out area.

Curbside Pickup for Furniture, Mattresses, Desks, Carpeting, Etc.

If you live in the student move out area, you will not be required to complete a work order before you set out large items for items destined for the landfill between August 5, 2024 and 6:30am Friday, August 23, 2024.

This is a majority of large items we collect.  It includes couches, chairs, desks, mattresses, tables, area rugs, wood bookshelves, plastic shelving units, and many other items.

Crews will be regularly roaming through the student move out area during these times collecting items.

Work Orders Required for Appliances and Special Large Items

Large item work orders are still required in the student move-out area during the move out period for certain special items.

This include microwaves, air conditioners, tires, dehumidifiers, and other items that carry a fee for certain residents or requires special handling.

Work orders are required for these special items to be sure the correct truck is routed to these homes to collect them.

Who pays the fees and why is explained later in this release.

Work Orders Required in the Student Move-Out Area for All Items After 6:30am August 23, 2024

After 6:30am on Friday, August 23, you must complete a work order to get your home on the pickup schedule for large item pickup.  Normal large item operations will resume after this time.

Remember to submit the work order and then set the item out on the date you choose in the form.

Do not set the item out earlier than the date you pick.  Each week has a limited number of work orders crews can fulfill.  Setting the item out early contributes to neighborhood clutter.

Failure to submit work order for your large items once the above date and time passes can result in fines from Building Inspection.

Drop-off Site for Furniture, Mattresses, Etc.

If you are bringing items to a drop-off site, most items are accepted for free as well and no work order is required. This is the normal procedure throughout the year for dropping off items.

Be sure to follow all other drop-off site rules and restrictions.

Drop-off Site for Appliances and Special Large Items

Appliances, like microwaves and air conditions, and special items, like tires, require a fee.

However, only certain residents are required to pay a fee before dropping off items at one of our sites.

Who Needs to Pay Fees for Appliances and Special Items

Residents Who Do Not Pay Fees

If your home receives recycling collection from the Streets Division, you do not need to pay a fee for special items and appliances when you take them to a drop-off site.

Since your home receives recycling collection from the Streets Division, that means you pay the Resource Recovery Special Charge.  The special charge covers the fee for these items.

Residents Who Must Pay Fees

If your home has recycling collected by a private company, then you will need to pay a fee for these special items and appliances.

If your recycling is placed into metal dumpsters, or if the carts you use do not say “City of Madison” on the side of them, then you do not receive collection from the Streets Division.  This also means you do not pay the Resource Recovery Special Charge, so you will need to pay the necessary fees for the items.

You can pay the fee by buying a fee sticker using the work order systemover the phone, or in-person by visiting the either the Streets East or Streets West offices.

Check the Streets Division’s website for a full list of items that require a fee.

No Changes for Residents Outside of the Student Move Out Area – Work Orders Required for All Items

If you do not live in the student move-out area, there are no changes to the large item work order system for you.

You will still need to complete a work order before you place the items out for collection.
