Vehicles authorized to use 400-600 Blocks of State Street during Moving Days
As thousands of people move into apartments downtown this week, the City of Madison will pause its vehicle closure on the 400-600 blocks of State Street through Sunday, August 18 to accommodate moving trucks and other vehicles being used during the annual August Moving Days.
The 400-600 blocks of State Street have been closed to all non-emergency vehicle traffic after 3:00pm on weekdays and after 10:00am on weekends since early May as part of the State Street Pedestrian Mall experiment. Keeping the restriction in place during the traditional downtown moving days would have caused logistical headaches for the many people trying to move into apartments over the next couple of weeks, so City staff are pausing the restriction to allow access to apartments on that portion of State Street.
Even with vehicle access being allowed for moving purposes, drivers should still exercise caution, be mindful of pedestrians and bicyclists in the area, and travel at low speeds. Vehicles will be authorized to use State Street for active loading/unloading purposes but are still required to abide by all other posted restrictions.
