MPD receives new tool to help reunite lost pets with owners

MADISON, Wis. – The Madison Police Department has a new tool to help reunite lost pets with their owners.
Lost Dogs of Wisconsin donated a pet microchip scanner to MPD. The volunteer-run group provides free resources to dog owners across Wisconsin searching for their missing pets.
Microchips are tiny transponders, about the size of a grain of rice, that are implanted under your pet’s skin by most veterinarians and animal shelters. According to the Humane Society of the United States, the chips act as a unique identifier in case an animal’s tags or collar are lost. The chip will present owner information if scanned by a special microchip scanner.
The microchip scanner will be housed in our Central District but is available to officers throughout the entire city. The Madison Police Department is reminding pet owners to update microchip information as you move or change phone numbers.
