Promise kept: City of Madison secures lease for Maurer’s Market on S. Park St.
After months of negotiations, the City of Madison and Maurer’s Market have signed and executed a lease agreement that will ensure people living in South Madison will still have access to a full-service grocery store in the area for years to come.
The agreement is years in the making. The initial grocer involved in the project informed the City in September 2021 that they would not be able to continue, meaning the City needed to find a replacement.
Maurer’s agreed to step in as the tenant for the 24,000-square foot City-owned first-floor grocery condo at 815 Cedar Street in May 2023 and signed the lease on November 18, 2024 after needed improvements to the building were agreed upon and funded by the Common Council.
With the future of another grocery store in the area in question for several years, City staff worked extensively to ensure community members living in South Madison were still able to get their groceries without having to travel miles away.
