Madison, WI – The State of Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction has declared the week of February 17-21 Adult School Crossing Guard Recognition Week, and the City of Madison proudly recognizes their 63 dedicated crossing guards who work tirelessly at intersections throughout the city to ensure children and families arrive at school safely.

February provides a fitting opportunity to honor these essential community members, who often work in challenging winter conditions. Snow, freezing rain, and cold temperatures do not deter them from their posts, where they play a critical role in pedestrian safety.

“Every day, our crossing guards brave the elements to ensure our children have safe routes to school,” said Alex Stewart, City of Madison Crossing Guard Supervisor. “Their commitment to safety, even in the toughest winter conditions, is truly commendable. This week is our chance, and the community’s chance, to express our appreciation of them.”

The City of Madison encourages everyone to show their appreciation in simple ways, such as giving a friendly wave or saying thank you. However, the most meaningful way to recognize crossing guards is by following safe driving practices near school zones:

  • Reduce your speed and drive with extra caution, especially in winter conditions.
  • Approach school zones and crossings carefully, staying alert for children.
  • Follow all posted signs and remember that speed limits reduce in school zones.
  • When a crossing guard raises their stop sign, stop at least 10 feet away and remain stopped until both the children and the crossing guard have safely reached the curb.

Everyone plays a role in keeping our streets safe. Drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists can all contribute by staying alert and mindful of crossing guards' instructions.

Throughout the week, the City of Madison Traffic and Parking Facebook page will highlight some of our dedicated crossing guards, sharing their motivations and stories. Follow along to learn more about these essential community members and the crossing guard program.
