Madison Arts Commission and Monona Terrace Announce Call for Art for Rooftop and Olin Terrace

posted

The Madison Arts Commission invites artists to apply to the 2025 Art on the Rooftop exhibition at the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center. Art on the Rooftop is a free sculpture exhibition that showcases the rooftop gardens and the facility as another “must see” Madison destination.

Monona Terrace and the Madison Arts Commission seek works that engage visitors and complement the organic architecture of Wright's curvilinear and glass-centric façade. The Madison Arts Commission (MAC) will select five sculptures total. Four sculptures will be exhibited on the William T. Evjue Rooftop Gardens from May – October 2025. Selected artists receive $1,500 for loaning the work for six-months. Additionally, one sculpture will be chosen for year-round exhibition on Olin Terrace, May 2025 – April 2026. That artist will receive $2,600 for loaning the work for one year.

Sculptures will be in a high traffic public environment with unsupervised audiences. Proposed artworks must be:

  • Original
  • Created within the past five years
  • Safe and appropriate for visitors of all ages
  • Constructed of durable and safe components
  • Maintenance-free for the duration of the exhibition.
  • Suitable for outdoor display in severe weather such as wind, rain, heat, snow, and frost.
  • Under 200 pounds and easily lifted into raised garden beds
  • Able to be attached to a 48” diameter concrete pad.

Anticipated Timeline:

  • Deadline for entries: March 13, 2025
  • Artists notified: March 21, 2025
  • Sculpture Installation: May 5-8, 2025
  • Rooftop Sculpture Removal: November 3-6, 2025
  • Olin Terrace Sculpture Removal: April 6-9, 2026
