Voter Registration 'Closes' Today

posted

Today is the final day to register to vote online or by mail prior to the April 1 Spring Election.

The Madison City Clerk’s Office encourages voters to check their registration at MyVote WI. Anyone who has moved – even to a new apartment in the same building –needs to update their voter registration. Voters who registered with someone on the street should check the My Vote site to make sure their form and proof of address were submitted to the Clerk’s Office and were complete.

“Make sure you’re all set for Election Day by registering to vote before the deadline,” says Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway. “In Madison, we don’t care who you vote for — we just want to ensure every eligible voter is able to cast a ballot. Your participation is essential to ensuring the health of our democracy.”

Voter registration is available at all absentee voting sites when open for voting Tuesday, March 18, through Friday, March 28, and at the polls on Election Day. Proof of address is needed when registering to vote, and may be electronic.  Any of these documents can be used as proof of address as long the name and address on the document are the name and address on the voter registration form:

  • Utility bill issued in the last 90 days (water, gas, electric, phone, cable, or internet)
  • Bank statement (bank, credit union, credit card, mortgage)
  • Current and valid Wisconsin driver license/ID
  • Government document (federal, state, county, municipal, tribal, UW, Madison College, or public school)
  • Paycheck
  • Residential lease effective on day of registration (cannot be used if registering to vote by mail)
  • Certified housing list from UW-Madison or Edgewood College (available at absentee voting sites and at the polls), student must also show college ID
  • Affidavit from a social service agency providing services to the homeless
  • Contract or intake document from a nursing home or residential care facility

The goal of the City Clerk’s Office is that each eligible voter will be able to cast a ballot and have that ballot counted.
