Are there any charges for dropping off items?

There are recycling charges for some large items and appliances, but not every resident is required to pay.

If the City of Madison collects your recycling, you do not need to pay any extra charges.  Why is that?  If the city collects your recycling, you pay the monthly Resource Recovery Special Charge. The costs to cover the charges related to recycling these special items are covered by your Municipal Services (water) bill by the Resource Recovery Special Charge.

If the City does not collect your recycling, you will need to pay a recycling charge for these certain items.  Why is that?  Since the City does not collect your recycling, you do not pay the Resource Recovery Special Charge, and those costs need to be covered.  You can tell if the city collects your recycling easily.  If you use large metal dumpsters or if the carts at your home do not say “City of Madison,” then the City of Madison does not collect your recycling.

If the fee applies to you, you can see the list of items that have a charge for disposal on our website.

How to Purchase Recycling Fee Stickers before Dropping Off Items

If you are a Madison resident who needs to pay a fee for certain times, you can purchase the sticker online in advance at www.cityofmadison.com/LargeItemWorkOrder.

You can also purchase the sticker in person at Streets Division offices, or over the phone.  The Streets Division offices are located at 1501 W. Badger Rd and 4602 Sycamore Ave. They are open 7:30am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday.

You can call us at 608-246-4532 or 608-266-4681 to make the purchase over the phone. The phone lines are staffed from 7:30am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday.

You could also mail us a check.  Make checks payable to City Treasurer.  Include a note with your check explaining what you are purchasing. Mail the check and the note to the following address:

              City of Madison Streets Division

              1501 W. Badger Rd

              Madison, WI  53713

You Can’t Buy a Fee Sticker from Drop-off Site Workers

Staff working in the drop-off sites can’t sell you a sticker if you need one.

If you are required to pay a fee and you are dropping off an item that requires one, like a microwave, you need to purchase the recycling fee sticker before arriving at the drop-off site.

A full list of the items that require a fee, and an explanation about who needs to pay them, can be found on the large item collection website, www.cityofmadison.com/LargeItem.
