Announcement Regarding the City of Madison Clerk’s Office
For Immediate Release
April 14, 2025
Maribeth Witzel-Behl has resigned from her position as City of Madison Clerk.
Witzel-Behl was first appointed to the position in 2006. She administered more than 60 elections as Clerk, in addition to overseeing the City's legislative tracking system and issuance of City and County licenses and permits. Notably, she helped develop a strong culture of customer service and civic pride in her office. Her diligence in supporting and training election officials was greatly appreciated by the thousands of poll workers she interacted with over nearly two decades with the City.
Throughout her long tenure, Witzel-Behl was also committed to inclusivity and community engagement. She implemented numerous initiatives at the Clerk’s Office to make City government and elections more accessible.
“On behalf of City of Madison residents, I want to extend my gratitude to Maribeth for her commitment and dedication to public service,” said Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway. “Maribeth embodies the motto she brought to the Clerk’s Office: ‘We exist to assist.’ I wish her the very best in future endeavors.”
City Attorney Michael Haas will continue to serve as Acting Clerk while a national search is conducted to find a permanent replacement to lead the agency.
