The Madison Arts Commission is inviting community members to share their vision for public art that could be incorporated into the Park Badger Redevelopment as part of the City of Madison’s Percent for Arts Program.

The City’s Community Development Authority (CDA) is redeveloping the majority of the block at the corner of S. Park St. and W. Badger Rd. in a multi-phase project that will bring hundreds of affordable homes, new space for Public Health Madison & Dane County, and a new fire station to the neighborhood. The redevelopment will complement other recent additions and ongoing initiatives in the area, including the new Black Business Hub, Centro Hispano’s new facility, the Center for Black Excellence, and the new Village on Park parking structure.

The Park Badger redevelopment presents multiple opportunities for public art, including along a new public greenway between the first two buildings being constructed as part of the project. Once all of the phases of the redevelopment are completed, the public greenway will serve as a connection between the Madison College Goodman Campus and the Village on Park.

A new survey has been launched to gather feedback on artistic preferences, themes, and styles that resonate with local residents. Results from the survey will inform the public art plan for the site.

Public art plays a crucial role in creating vibrant, welcoming spaces that reflect community identity. We're committed to incorporating artwork that speaks to the diverse perspectives and cultural heritage of South Madison.

Madison Arts Commission Chair Nick Pjevach

The online survey takes about 5-10 minutes to complete, and respondents have the chance to win a $50 Visa gift card. The survey includes questions on what community members would like to see when it comes to the images and values they would like the artwork to portray, where they would like to see the art located, and more. The survey will remain open until noon on May 9, 2025.
