Flags Day
Madison's Next Ephemeral Public Art Project
Tomorrow is FLAGS day, the day Rebecca Peebles is launching her temporary public art project "Flags," which received a summer 2008 Madison Arts Commission BLINK grant. "Flags" combines performance, printmaking, and textile art to create a moving, human chain of Tibetan prayer flags. Participants will walk through Madison to symbolize "joy, care and goodwill for the places we walk and the people there." The walk will be from 11-3 on Saturday, August 16, 2008. Here is the anticipated schedule: 10:45a shift 1 volunteers meet and organize at Georgia O'keefe Middle School. 11:00a shift 1 begins walking up Williamson St. toward the Capitol Square via King St. We should arrive at the top of King St. by approximately 11:30 and will continue to loop the capitol square until the end of the hour. 12:00p shift 2 meets, organizes and begins walking the capitol square with branches to Monona Terrace and down State Street. 1:00p shift 3 meets, organizes and begins walking the capitol square with branches down State Street and to James Madison Park for the finish. 2:00p All participants, friends, guests, citizens of Madison and interested onlookers are invited to attend the informal reception and picnic at James Madison Park. This is a time to meet the artist and participants, gain perspective or information into the themes of F L A G S and to celebrate this peaceful offering. Visit the artist's blog to learn more and see the wonderful image of the t-shirt prayer flags on her back porch. http://holsumation.blogspot.com/ or contact the artist at flybeckyfly@gmail.com Next BLINK application deadline is October 1, 2008.
