Madison’s Upcoming Neighborhood Conference: Strong Leaders, Healthy Places

Madison’s citywide neighborhood conference will be held Saturday, September 13. This year’s event will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with an informal reception to follow at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center, One John Nolen Drive, Madison.
"This event will be a one-day celebration and learning experience to assist neighborhood leaders in their efforts to create and sustain healthy, walkable neighborhoods, from the bottom-up," said Madison Mayor Paul Soglin. "The conference will be a day packed full of stories, talks, and discussions recognizing all the good works being done by citizens, neighborhoods, and the other caretakers of our community."
The major focus for 2014′s event, Strong Leaders, Healthy Places will be building a strong civic infrastructure to support equitable, healthy, and walkable neighborhoods. Don Edwards, Director of Justice and Sustainability Associates, will be making a trip to Madison from DC with the support of MGE. He is well known for engaging marginalized communities, being technologically savvy in capturing community voices, and working tirelessly to ensure conversations among people from different social and economic backgrounds on citywide plans and revitalization projects.
Several workshops will focus on the City of Madison Equity and Social Justice Initiative and how neighborhoods can use the principles to assess policies, plans, and programs occurring or proposed in their neighborhoods. Discussions focusing on building capacity, working effectively, and sharing success stories are designed to inspire, encourage and better equip residents to help our neighborhoods be all they can be.
