City of Madison Partners with Urban League of Greater Madison On My Brother's Keeper Madison

posted

The City of Madison is announcing a partnership with the Urban League of Greater Madison to implement  Step 4 of  President Barack Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Community Challenge or MBK Madison. The initiative, accepted by Mayor Paul R. Soglin and the Madison Common Council in September of 2014, focuses on improving life chances for boys and young men of color.

Step 4 of the MBK challenge playbook,  involves the creation of a plan of action including a protocol for tracking data, benchmarks and timelines for review and a blueprint for allocating new and existing efforts and resources to meet our MBK Madison goals. The Urban League will also coordinate community partners and partner with project SOAR to utilize its mentoring program in support of MBK Madison.

The ULGM efforts will concentrate on Madison’s two local priority areas:

  • ensure all boys and young men of color graduate from high school and
  • ensure all boys and young men of color stay safe from violent crime and receive second chances.
To achieve these goals, the Urban League will work with the Madison Metropolitan School District on the Community Schools Initiatives and the Dane County Restorative Justice Coalition.

This is the first step by the City to establish and sustain MBK Madison as a community directed initiative to improve the lives of boys and young men of color.
