Demolition of Government East Garage to start week of August 17th
Government East Garage is scheduled for demolition, starting on the west side of the structure along South Pinckney Street and proceed east, beginning the week of August 17th, according to a work schedule proved by the contractor, Veit Company, Inc., to the City Engineering Division.
Opening in 1958, the 62 year old structure which holds the distinction of being the first public parking garage owned by the City, will be removed with the aid of concrete crushers, hydraulic breakers and concrete saws. Steel components will be separated and recycled.
"The site will end up with the crushed concrete remaining on site as backfill, possibly sloping down from street grades," Dave Schaller, City Project Manager with the Engineering Division, said. "Naturally the intent wil be to minimize any impacts to local businesses. There will be some noise and vibrations with the demolition."
Demolition will proceed slower along the east property line, with increased hand work where the garage abuts the Great Dane Pub and Tempest Oyster Bar buildings. "The Contractor will be using water to minimize any dust created by the demolition" Schaller said.
A new stairway will be built to the second floor of the Great Dane Pub building that contains their office. The project is anticipated to wrap up in November.
Demolition of Government East Garage follows the opening of the City's newest parking structure, the Wilson Street Garage, which opened to the public on June 22nd. The new, modern garage has 520 public parking spaces, electrical vehicle charging stations (EVCS) for public use, 40 spaces for City Fleet vehicles, bicycle parking and a bicycle center.
Minimal traffic impacts are anticipated with demolition work.
