Madison’s drinking water continues to meet all federal and state standards for health and safety

Postcards are beginning to arrive in mailboxes across Madison letting people know their drinking water continues to meet or exceed all federal and state standards for health and safety. The cards announce the release of the Annual Drinking Water Quality Report, which provides an overview of the tens of thousands of drinking water quality tests Madison Water Utility conducted in 2022.  The utility proudly reports another year of no violations of any state or federal regulation for drinking water safety.

All Madison Water Utility customers will be receiving a postcard directing them to the following link so they can review the report in detail: MadisonWater.org/QualityReport.

Madison Water Utility takes the quality of the city’s drinking water very seriously, routinely collecting more samples and running more tests than are required by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Individual reports summarizing drinking water quality for each Madison well also have been updated to reflect the latest test results for potential contaminants such as nitrate, arsenic, mercury, and volatile organic compounds.  More information about the extensive testing conducted and test results can be found at cityofmadison.com/water/water-quality/water-quality-testing.

Madison’s drinking water system is made up of over 900 miles of water main, 32 reservoirs, and 21 active wells. Water is drawn from a rich sandstone aquifer that is located below the city. All Madison Water Utility facilities are monitored 24 hours-a-day, and drinking water safety tests are regularly conducted at every operating well.

To request a paper copy of the report, please call (608) 261-9299 (voicemail only).
