Why it matters
Madison Water Utility is the first in Wisconsin to allow customers to view their monthly, daily, even hourly water use online. Tracking your water use can help you catch plumbing leaks and spot inefficient appliances and fixtures like old water softeners, washing machines and toilets. If you have an older toilet, consider taking advantage of our toilet rebate program to replace it with a high-efficiency model. Saving water saves energy.
It takes an enormous amount of energy to pump water from the ground and then pump it again to homes and businesses across Madison. We pump more than 8 tons of water from the aquifer every minute at every operating well across the city. Take a look at some of our conservation tips to see how you can conserve, and learn how to spot leaks in your home.
People living in single family homes and duplexes in Madison currently use 60.9 gallons of water per person per day, but we hope to reduce that number by giving customers the detailed information they need to conserve. Thousands of MWU customers are taking the first, critical step towards conservation by tracking their detailed water use online. Once you know when you're using water and how you’re using water, it’s easier to conserve.
