After a Flood

A Streets Division truck picks up large items from a front yard after the August 2019 flood.

Cleanup and recovery from a flood can span anywhere from days to years. You should begin cleanup immediately because flood waters can carry contaminants that can pose health risks, such as sewage, fertilizer, manure, gas, and pesticides. It is important to stay out of flood waters if possible and clean up properly.

Report Flooding

Report flooding and damage to private property or public lands in the City of Madison. City Engineering will use the information to improve the stormwater system to reduce flooding damage in the future.

Sandbag Collection, Disposal

Find out what to do with your sandbags once the threat of flooding has passed.

Report Damaged Trees, Power Lines

If a tree was damaged during a storm, please report tree damage.

Lights out, power line down, or other emergency, call MG&E at 608-509-4338 or Alliant Energy at 800-255-4268, whichever provides power to your home.

Trash and Large Item Pickup

The Streets Division performs large item pick up by appointment. You have to submit a large item work order to get on the pickup schedule.  Large items are generally considered to be anything too large for the trash cart, and items that require special handling, like fluorescent light fixtures and appliances.  Small trash items that do not require special handling, like carpeting or small pieces of furniture can be placed into your home’s trash cart.

Sanitary Sewer Backups

Call City of Madison Engineering at 608-266-4430. Personnel are available:

Monday – Friday: 7:30 a.m – 11 p.m.

Saturday – Sunday: 9:00 a.m. – 11 p.m.

After 11 p.m., an emergency crew will be called in to respond to your call.
