Sheboygan/Segoe Redesign

August 8, 2024 Update

Work on Sheboygan Avenue is complete, and the base layer of asphalt has been laid on Segoe Road. Restoration is also nearly complete on Segoe Road. Over the next couple weeks, the contractor will work on replacing key median sections with lower, rolled curb for better fire access to Segoe Road. When that work is completed, the final layer of asphalt will be laid, pavement markings and signage will be placed, and the project will be finished. We are still targeting an early September opening day for Segoe Road, but construction may continue beyond that on the BRT station at Segoe and Sheboygan. Thank you to everyone for your patience during this construction process.

Exhibit A: Project Location Map

The overall project includes pavement reconstruction, spot replacements of curb and gutter, sidewalk, and driveway aprons. The project also includes improved pedestrian crossings, bike lanes, storm sewer replacement, new storm sewer (existing will remain), partial replacement of sanitary sewer and laterals, partial replacement of water main and services, new street lighting, new pavement markings, and new signs.

Hear from Project Manager Mario Galindez for this project in Street Meets 2024:

Segoe Road will be reconfigured from 2 lanes in each direction to 1 lane in each direction from Regent Street to Sheboygan Avenue. with the layout shown in Exhibits B and C. This will include median protected bike lanes for safe and comfortable bike access. Additionally, pedestrian crossings will be improved at the intersections of Segoe Road and Sawyer Terrace, Segoe Road and Heather Crest, Segoe Road and Vernon Boulevard, and the north side of Segoe Road & Regent Street. These improvements, which include median refuges and shortened pedestrian crossings, are designed to lower vehicle speeds and improve roadway comfort and safety for pedestrians. A push button flashing pedestrian signal will be installed at Segoe Road & Heather Crest crossing. The traffic signal at Segoe Road & Sawyer Terrace will be reconstructed and placed back after the project is complete.

Sheboygan Ave. will be reconfigured to add buffered bike lanes from Whitney Way to Segoe Rd. (see Exhibit D below). The mid-block crossing on Sheboygan Ave. between Eau Claire Ave. and Segoe Rd. will be reconfigured to match the next phase of the Madison Yards project which is on the north side of the street. This project will no longer impact the traffic light at Segoe Road & Regent Street.  The signal will remain in place for the foreseeable future.

This project design team is working in conjunction with the ongoing Madison Yards development team north of Sheboygan Avenue between Eau Claire Avenue and Segoe Road and the BRT team which is adding two new stations in the project limits.Learn more about the BRT Project

Project Updates

August 8, 2024 Update

Thank you to everyone for your patience during this construction process.

April 17, 2024 Update

Traffic is now two-way on Sawyer Terrace and will remain so for the rest of the project to ease access to the post office and residences along that street. The contractor and city inspection staff are working on installing ADA accessible crossings for Segoe Road as construction continues. Thank you to those who reached out and helped us identify this previous oversight.

Water main is complete on Segoe Rd, so the contractor will shortly begin installing the new sanitary sewer on Segoe Rd. There will be a partial closure of the intersection of Regent & Segoe starting Tuesday, 4/30/24 and lasting a maximum of 5 days through Saturday, 5/4/24 so the contractor can connect the new Segoe sanitary main to the Regent Street main. All Metro service through the intersection will continue; see https://www.cityofmadison.com/metro/detours for more information on temporary stop locations.

Sheboygan Avenue from Eau Claire Avenue to Segoe Road is expected to be closed to through traffic starting on 4/22/24. The contractor will then begin work on gas main relocation, pavement pulverization, and storm sewer installation.

Sheboygan Avenue from Whitney Way to Eau Claire Avenue is expected to be closed to through traffic starting the week of 5/15/24.

April 4, 2024 Update

Water main has been completed on Segoe Road from the Sheboygan-Segoe intersection up to Frey street. Storm sewer is 60% complete at the Sheboygan-Segoe intersection and should be completed by Monday 4/8/24. This will pave the way for the upcoming construction of the BRT station at that intersection. Over the next couple of weeks, the contractor will be installing the rest of the water main on Segoe Road starting at Regent Street moving north.

Sheboygan Avenue from Eau Claire Avenue to Segoe Road is expected to be closed to through traffic starting the week of 4/22/24.

Sheboygan Avenue from Whitney Way to Eau Claire Avenue is expected to be closed to through traffic starting the week of 5/15/24.

March 11, 2024 Update

Work is scheduled to begin the week of March 20, 2024 on Segoe Road. Further updates will be posted as the project progresses.

Fact Sheet

June 11, 2023 Update

After input from the public and the Transportation Commission, the design team has selected Option B for Segoe Road.  Thank you to everyone who gave input through the survey, the public information meeting, email, and calls. The design team will determine the preliminary assessments for each property along the project and mail out ahead of the Public Hearing for the project approval at the Board of Public Works on September 6, 2023.
