Madison Declares November 2023 Family Literacy Month & Madison Reading Project Month

WHEREAS, November is Family Literacy Month; and 

WHEREAS, the City of Madison encourages access to literacy in our schools, homes and libraries; and 

WHEREAS, the City works closely with the Madison Metropolitan School District to support educators and students to raise reading scores and appreciates the efforts of various non-profit organizations working together in this effort; and 

WHEREAS, the Madison Reading Project was founded by Rowan Childs in 2014 as a pilot after school program at the Salvation Army Family Shelter on Darbo Drive in Madison, and now operates throughout Dane county; and

WHEREAS, the Madison Reading Project works to ignite a love for reading by working closely with after-school programs, community centers, and all educators to increase book ownership; and 

WHEREAS, Madison Reading Project works to provide all families and caregivers with early literacy tools, such as Dolly Parton's Imagination Program, via their First Pages Program; and 

WHEREAS, the Madison Reading Project provides access to free reading and literacy materials for educators, family and children, not only in November during 'Family Literacy Month," but all through the year as well; and 

WHEREAS, it is the right of everyone regardless of age, race, color, religion, gender, national origin or ability to have access to literacy materials and books. 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Satya Rhodes-Conway, Mayor of Madison Wisconsin, do hereby proclaim November 2023, as 

FAMILY LITERACY MONTH

and

MADISON READING PROJECT MONTH

in the City of Madison.
