Pressure Zones 6W and 7 Resilience Project
Project Details
Project Information
This project was funded by the Safe Drinking Water Loan Program (SDWLP) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Project Description
Madison Water Utility has always been proud of the level of service we provide to our community. One of the factors that play into the level of service we provide is system resilience. For our water system to be resilient to well outages and other factors, we are completing a project that will allow Well 14 to pump water into two separate pressure zones. Installation of a remote-controlled Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) near the intersection of Whitney Way and Old Middleton Road would allow the transfer of water from Pressure Zone 7 into Pressure Zone 6E. These two pressure zones are located within Region C. This would help the far western part of Pressure Zone 6E which is fed primarily by UW 14.
This will be Madison Water Utility’s second system resilience project. The Utility has been working with and receiving assistance from WI Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to develop, evaluate, and refine successful specifications for this resilience enhancement project. This project was completed March 2023 at an estimated cost of $40,000.
Water Supply and Water Quality Benefits
With the addition of a zone transfer vault, Well 14 will be able to pump water to pressure zones 6W and 7. This will double the number of residents Well 14 can supply and will provide increased resilience for unforeseen failures at other wells within these two pressure zones. Adding this layer of resilience will minimize water outages and improve both water quality and flow in the area at a reduced cost to the ratepayer. Thanks also to the funding by the Safe Drinking Water Loan Program (SDWLP) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
