The 2024 Spring Yard Waste Collection is Over, Curbside Pickup Returns in the Fall

At this time, Madison residents should not set out yard waste for curbside collection.

The 2024 spring yard waste set-out dates for all neighborhoods have passed.

At the time of this publication, Streets Division collection crews are still working in neighborhoods that had a Sunday, May 12, 2024 set out date. Once all of these final neighborhoods have received their last pickup opportunity for the spring, this collection season will end, and crews will move on to other duties.

What should you do with yard waste now that curbside set-out opportunities have passed?

Take the material to one of the Streets Division drop-off sites.  

Residents may also want to try home composting or mulching grass clippings into their lawn.

Do not place yard waste into the trash carts.  Yard waste, like grass clippings, leaves, and similar plant debris, have been banned from Wisconsin landfills for over 30 years.  Trash carts found with yard waste material in them will not be emptied.

Do not place yard waste in recycling carts, either.  Yard waste in mixed with recyclables will damage sorting equipment. Recycling carts found with yard waste in them will not be collected.

Before loading your vehicle, check the drop-off site webpage so you know which sites are open and when.

When will curbside yard waste collection start again?

Curbside yard waste collection will return in the fall.

The dates when you should put yard waste at the curb for pickup this fall will be announced later this year.

What is yard waste? 

Yard waste is considered weeds, leaves, grass clippings, and other plant debris that you have raked or pulled from your lawns or gardens. Yard waste is hauled to a processor where it is composted.

The limbs and branches you cut from trees, shrubs, and bushes are not yard waste.  This is brush.  There is a separate collection schedule for this material.
