1. Resources for the Madison Community

Madison stands with the families of Abundant Life community. This page is dedicated to connecting victims and the broader community to resources and accurate information about the tragic events that happened on December 16.

Bike Parking Program

Bicycle parking is an important supporting element to ensure Madison is a bicycle friendly destination and is a critical component in encouraging people to choose to bike.

City Bike Parking Program

Does your business need bicycle parking? Are bicycles currently being locked to street signs, light poles or other items in front of your business?

Terrace Bike Parking

The City of Madison installs public parking in the public right-of-way (City property) to encourage bicycling for short trips. Bicycle racks are placed to avoid conflicts with pedestrians, parking meters, fire hydrants and away from business entrances.

Is Your Business Eligible?

  • There is no off-street motor vehicle parking available
  • The terrace between the street and sidewalk is at least 5 feet or wider
  • The terrace is concrete (bike racks need to be bolted down for security)

Is There a Cost to the Business Owner?

For eligible locations there is no cost to the business or property owner. Bike racks are installed as funding is available. You must keep the bike racks clear of obstructions so they can be used by your customers.

Bike Corrals

Currently the City of Madison has two on-street bike corrals. Bike corrals meet a need where the terrace does not have enough room to accommodate bike parking needs of businesses in the area. They also can be paired with in-street cafes to improve the overall street layout and provide more space for pedestrians. An on-street bike corral replacing a car space allows for more people to be accommodated than a typical car space with 7-10 bikes fitting into the space.

Zoning Code

The City of Madison also has a zoning code ordinance that details how much bike parking needs to be included in private development projects along with details on what kind of bicycle parking meets the requirements.
