Join Us Today for the Juneteenth Flag Raising and BCycle Ribbon Cutting: Honoring Our History and Celebrating Community

posted

Dear Constituents,

I am excited to invite you all to two important events happening today, Tuesday, June 4th.

Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony

Time: Noon
Location: City County Building

This event honors the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates African American freedom and achievement. In November 2022, I visited Goree Island in Senegal, a poignant symbol of the transatlantic slave trade where millions of Africans were captured and transported into slavery. An estimated six million Africans lost their lives during captivity and the journey across the Atlantic. This dark chapter in history is often unknown but must never be forgotten.

I extend my gratitude to State Representative Samba Baldeh for inviting me to be part of the delegation that visited this historic site. Their commitment to preserving and sharing this important history is commendable.

The Juneteenth flag raising is an opportunity for our community to come together, reflect, and commit to equality and justice. Let us honor our ancestors, recognize the significance of Juneteenth, and work towards a more just society.

BCycle Ribbon Cutting and Community Event

Time: 4:30pm - 6:00pm
Location: Warner Park at the Duck Pond

Great news! There is a new BCycle station being installed at Warner Park, just in time for Mallards baseball and women's softball season. BCycle and the Mallards are hosting a ribbon cutting and a larger community-focused event with free Ian's Pizza and a transportation-focused family carnival.

DRAFT Agenda for the Event:

  • 4:30pm: Ribbon cutting at the new station – comments from Alders/Mayor, BCycle, and Big Top Sports.
  • 4:45pm: Pizza from Ian’s for attendees.
  • 5pm-6pm: Transportation-focused family carnival – get folks riding BCycles and showcase other bike, bus, carpool, etc. partners through tabling, games, or bike rodeo.

This should be a fun event!

Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you at these important and exciting events today.

Sincerely,

District 18 Alder
