Crossing Guard Recruitment Begins for Upcoming School Year

The City of Madison Traffic Engineering Division is currently recruiting crossing guards for the upcoming 2024-25 school year. The City recognizes the critical role that crossing guards play in ensuring the safety of our youngest residents, and is actively seeking individuals who are committed to making a positive impact to join our essential team.

“Crossing guards are a cornerstone of our efforts to enhance school zone and pedestrian safety,” said Alex Stewart, Crossing Guard Supervisor. “Their presence provides peace of mind to both parents of walking students and the community as a whole. Their role cannot be overstated; they are on the front lines of keeping our kids safe each day. We are committed to providing the city’s residents with a well-staffed and well-trained crossing guard program.”

In our efforts to create a safer community, we encourage those who share our commitment to the well-being of our youngest students to consider becoming a crossing guard. This work offers a chance to make a lasting impact on the lives of our community's most vulnerable population. By joining our team, you will play a crucial role in a program that teaches elementary-aged children safe pedestrian behaviors that remain useful their entire lives.

No prior experience is required to become a crossing guard. The City provides uniforms and a comprehensive paid training to equip staff with the necessary tools to excel in this meaningful role.

In addition to the opportunity to make a vital difference in our community, crossing guards receive:

• $20.26/hr. to start, and 10-15 hours of work per week.
• Schedule is Monday-Friday throughout the school year.
  • Winter, spring, and summer breaks are off!
• Crossing guards earn paid sick leave, paid holidays, and qualify for a free annual Metro bus pass.
• Permanent crossing guards also receive a robust annual uniform clothing allowance.

Apply by the end of July 2024 to be included in the first round of hiring! The first round of interviews will begin mid-August, with training anticipated in late August (approximately one week before school starts in September).
