School Traffic Safety Team

What We Do

The School Traffic Safety Team was created in 19xx to bring together staff from the City and the Madison Metropolitan School District to improve safety of children and families walking and biking to school and address traffic safety issues in a holistic way. In recent years, the Wisconsin Bike Fed and First Student Inc. have joined the team to further the goals of Safe Routes to School and coordinate safety for children walking to and from their bus stops. The team is a primary point of contact for Principals and other school staff around transportation safety.

In 2024, the School Traffic Safety Team will be leading the process to create a Safe Routes to School Plan. This work includes:

  • Development of a strategic framework related to engagement, education and encouragement.
  • Working with selected schools to update their School Travel Safety Plans and prioritize needed infrastructure improvements.
  • Reviewing areas deemed hazardous to walk and bike for infrastructure improvements.
