New Tree Assessment Information

The City of Madison charges a one-time assessment to adjacent properties where there was never a tree planted before.

In 2024, this one-time charge was $253.26.

There is no charge for replacement trees. This charge only applies to planting a new tree in a place that never had a tree before.

Why did I receive an assessment for a new street tree?

Trees are considered part of the city's green infrastructure and are just as important as other types of infrastructure such as street lights, fire hydrants, and sidewalks. Trees, however, are one of the few types of infrastructure investments that increase in value over time.

What does the assessment for the new tree cover?

The purchase price of the tree plus all labor, fuel, supplies, and administrative/planning costs associated with planting. This one-time fee is a lifetime guarantee as well. Any future replacements (including removal, stump grubbing, and replanting) are covered and will not be assessed a second time.

Who do I contact about a payment schedule?

Please contact the Finance Department, via email or call 608-266-4008.

Does the city charge for replacing trees? Like if a tree falls over in a storm and new one is planted, will I be billed?

No.

Is this assessment new? I never heard of this before.

Assessing for trees planted in areas that never had trees before has been a common practice going back many years in Urban Forestry.
