Situation at Abundant Life Christian School

My heart goes out to the students, educators and families at Abundant Life Christian School. For these students and educators, school will never be the same.

I feel angry today. I am angry that students who are just trying to receive their education are once again put in harm’s way.

I grew up with active shooter drills being a routine part of my education experience. School shootings have become commonplace in our society but the best solution that was offered to students was to go to a corner of their classroom and hide. I’m sick of it.

There are a lot of policies that I would like to see enacted to help prevent senseless gun violence from occurring, but our City is preempted by the State Legislature.

Students and teachers deserve to feel safe in classrooms. Thoughts and prayers alone are not enough. We need real, meaningful action to address the root causes of gun violence. Dozens of bills have been introduced at the State Legislature, from red flag laws to background checks and safe storage, yet none have been given a vote under the current Republican leadership.

It's time for the legislature to pick up its slack and pass common-sense gun reform laws and address the gun violence epidemic in our state.
