Fire Station 6 Closes to Prepare for Redevelopment
Firefighters and Paramedics Move to Fish Hatchery Road
Effective Thursday, January 9, Madison Fire Station 6 located at 825 W. Badger Road will close its doors to make way for redevelopment. Emergency response personnel formerly housed on W. Badger Road will relocate to “temporary Fire Station 6" at 2120 Fish Hatchery Road. This location is the site of the former Town of Madison fire station and is situated within Station 6's original response area. The department expects to be housed at this facility until late 2026 or early 2027 while the new Park Badger redevelopment project is underway.
The Madison Fire Department emphasizes that emergency response capabilities to Fire Station 6's territory will not be disrupted or adversely impacted during the relocation.
Along with the transition, the temporary Fire Station 6 on Fish Hatchery Road will house both an engine company and an ambulance. The ladder truck previously housed on West Badger Road will temporarily relocate to Fire Station 14 on Dairy Drive. Both stations will maintain their original staffing levels, and the number of firefighters serving at each location will remain unchanged.
The Madison Fire Department is excited and proud to be part of the community-focused redevelopment project at South Park Street and West Badger Road. When the project comes to completion, a new Fire Station 6 will be integrated into the multi-use property, further incorporating MFD’s southside firefighters into the community and neighborhood it serves.
The new facilities will offer improvements to living spaces and accommodations for the firefighter/EMTs and firefighter/paramedics who reside at the firehouse during their 24-hour shifts. These include an overall design that better supports health and wellness. With room to grow, the department will be able to meet the demands of a growing city. Increased space will also allow enhanced opportunities for community engagement and neighborhood interaction, as well as space for the CARES program. The new fire station will also be more energy efficient, with developers currently exploring the viability of geothermal heating and cooling and on-site renewable energy systems, among other features. At minimum, Fire Station 6 will meet a LEED V4 Silver rating standard.
This project is still in the design phase. A third public meeting will be held in the spring, where the design team will share building design concepts for the first time. The date of the meeting is to be determined. Visit the Park Badger Redevelopment page to receive email announcements from the City of Madison Department of Planning, Community and Economic Development regarding the public information meeting and other project updates.
The old Fire Station 6 at 825 W. Badger Road will soon become a childcare facility as part of Madison College's Goodman South Campus expansion plan.
