City Meetings

Note: This is not a complete list of meetings for this upcoming week. All meetings and their details can be found at the Meeting Schedule page.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee meeting will take place on Tuesday, January 21, at 4:30 p.m. in virtual format. Agenda items include grant wards for overtime and supplies for the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network to manage firearm ballistic casings and digital evidence (I’m a cosponsor), authorizing grant contracts to support the Madison Area Resource Initiative (MARI) for individuals with substance use disorder who have committed nonviolent offenses stemming from addiction (I’m a cosponsor), and increasing the threshold requiring competitive selection of service contracts from $50,000 to $75,000 to cut down on administrative and staffing costs in the Finance Department.

Transportation Commission

The Transportation Commission meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 22, at 5:00 p.m. in virtual format. Agenda items include an update on the Americans with Disabilities Act Transition Plan 1 (link to presentation and text version), an update/presentation on transit equity for people with disabilities, and a Transportation Director’s Report which includes an update on a few transportation topics, including these three WisDOT highway studies that will be important to District 3 neighborhoods in the future:

  • On WisDOT’s Interstate Corridor Study project: WisDOT released their Final EIS and Record of Decision in December; the timeline for funding will be determined by the WI State Budget. The estimated timeline for Milwaukee St interchange and replacement of the Milwaukee St bridges over I-39/90/94 are part of the Badger interchange phase which is scheduled for the early 2040s.
  • On WisDOT’s North Stoughton Road Study project: WisDOT completed their Environmental Assessment of the project, but it has not been posted online yet. Key features include: an at-grade intersection of East Washington Ave and Stoughton Rd, a ped/bike crossing bridge over Stoughton Rd south of the Hwy 30 interchange, a ped/bike crossing bridge over East Washington Ave east of the Stoughton Road intersection, a shared use path on the east side of the corridor, gapped when US 51 travels adjacent to the airport.
  • On WisDOT’s South Stoughton Road Study project: this project is still in the alternative development stage. They hope to screen alternatives down to three by March and have a preferred alternative late 2025/early 2026.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Holiday Schedule for City Services

  • No Trash & Recycling Collection or Drop-off Sites on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (January 20, 2025): There will be no trash or recycling collection by the Streets Division on Monday, January 20, 2025 in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr holiday. The drop-off sites and Streets Division offices will also be closed. If your trash and recycling is collected on Mondays by the Streets Division, you should place your scheduled cart (or carts) to the curb for collection by 6:30am on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. If you have a Tuesday collection of trash and recycling by the Streets Division, you should also place your scheduled cart (or carts) out for emptying by 6:30am on January 21.   • Metro Service Reduced on January 20: Buses will be operating Saturday schedules on Monday, January 20 due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
  • City Offices are closed on Monday, January 20, 2025Administrative offices are closed on Monday, January 20, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. All emergency services will be open; please call 911.
  • For emergency water issues with the cold weather: Call Madison Water Utility at 608-266-4665, 24/7.
  • Sanitary Sewer Back-up: Call 608-266-4430. An emergency crew will respond to your call.
  • Report a Problem: Report non-emergencies that can wait until the next City working day.

Neighborhood Grant Application Available, Due Feb 18

The City of Madison’s Neighborhood Grants provide funds to build organizational capacity, beautify public places, and create community gathering places. These grants help improve quality of life in neighborhoods, and across the city. Here is the Neighborhood Grant Program Guide with more information about the types of projects that are eligible. There are multiple ways to apply for a grant, listed here on this City webpageAll applications are due by February 18, 4:30 p.m.

Do you have an idea for a project in your neighborhood? You can use the map on this City Planning webpage to find your neighborhood as well as contact information for your neighborhood association leaders, if available.

To Prepare Your Project:

  1. Meet with your neighborhood to plan a project and share your idea with your alder. Visit the Common Council webpage to find your alder and their contact information.
  2. Read the Grant GuidelinesEnglish | Hmong | Chinese (Spanish coming soon)
  3. View the Grant Workshop video and Grant Workshop presentation.
  4. Email Linda Horvath and Angela Puerta at neighborhoods@cityofmadison.com to discuss your eligibility and project idea, or to ask questions.
  5. You can still apply if you were unable to talk with staff if your proposal is eligible. See the Grant Guidelines.

Crisis, Intervention, and Prevention (CIP) - Community Voices

The Community Development Division (CDD) works with residents, neighborhoods, and stakeholders to overcome barriers and build a vibrant, prosperous, and healthy community. In 2025, the City of Madison will accept proposals from organizations focusing on Crisis, Intervention, and Prevention (CIP) services, with funding available starting January 1, 2026. Please note that CIP funding provides partial support to selected organizations, and the process takes about six months.

To guide this effort, we’ve launched the CIP Community Voice survey to gather input on experiences with currently funded CDD agencies. Your feedback is essential to ensure services meet Madison’s community needs.

We kindly request your help in distributing this survey within your networks. For comments or questions about the CIP Community Voice, or to arrange a presentation for service recipients to address their questions, please contact Nancy Saiz at nsaiz@cityofmadison.com.

Voces Comunitarias - Crisis, Intervención y Prevención (CIP)

La  Division de Desarrollo Comunitario (CDD por sus siglas en inglés)  trabaja con residentes, vecindarios, y partes interesadas para superar barreras y construir una comunidad vibrante, próspera y saludable. En 2025, la Ciudad de Madison aceptará propuestas de organizaciones que se centren en servicios de Crisis, Intervención y Prevención (CIP), con fondos disponibles a partir del 1 de enero de 2026.
