Advancing Golf Course Ecological Stewardship

posted

Dear Golf Madison Parks Family,

As we continue our commitment to enhancing the ecological sustainability of our municipal golf courses, I am excited to share some recent and upcoming initiatives that align with the recommendations set forth by the Task Force on Municipal Golf. Our efforts focus on reducing reliance on limited natural resources while enhancing ecological assets, ensuring that our courses remain not only great places to play but also valuable environmental resources for the community.

Prairie Burns at The Glen Golf Park
A major milestone in our ecological management strategy took place recently at The Glen Golf Park, where we conducted our first controlled burn in the native prairie areas. These prairies, installed in 2021 as part of the park’s redesign, benefit from periodic prescribed burns to remove dead plant material, control invasive species, and replenish soil nutrients. This process plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy and diverse prairie ecosystem that supports local wildlife and pollinators.

Oak Savanna Restoration & Prairie Installation at Yahara Hills
As part of the Yahara Hills Golf Course redesign project, we are excited to integrate ecological restoration efforts, including the restoration of an oak savanna and the installation of native prairie habitats. These enhancements will improve biodiversity, provide essential habitat for wildlife, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the course.

Native Seed Collection Efforts at Odana Hills & The Glen Golf Park
Looking ahead to fall 2025, we once again will be engaging with our dedicated volunteers in a native seed collection effort at both Odana Hills and The Glen Golf Park. This initiative will support future prairie restoration projects by ensuring a locally adapted seed source while also fostering community involvement in our sustainability efforts.

Introducing the AASPIRE Golf Ecology & Landscape Intern Position
In an exciting step forward, we are debuting the AASPIRE Golf Ecology and Landscape Intern position this season. This internship will provide hands-on experience in ecological restoration, sustainable landscape management, and habitat enhancement across our golf courses. By investing in the next generation of environmental stewards, we strengthen our commitment to integrating golf and conservation.

These projects represent just a few of the ways we are working to align our golf program with ecological best practices. We deeply appreciate the continued support of our community, volunteers, and partners as we strive to make Madison’s municipal golf courses models of environmental responsibility.

See you on the greens – and in the prairies!
