City Meetings

Transportation Commission

The Transportation Commission meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 23, at 5:00 p.m. in virtual format. Agenda items include amending Sections 24.02 and 1.08 of the Madison General Ordinances to add Disorderly Conduct directed at a city transit operator (I’m a sponsor) and an update on North/South Bus Rapid Transit (link to presentation). This meeting also includes the next round of staff-recommended traffic calming project approvals under the Safe Streets Madison program, including one traffic calming project in District 3: adding “bike boulevard” pavement markings to Stein Avenue in the Hiestand Park neighborhood where the new Autumn Ridge path’s route shares uses a stretch of the street to connect off-street path segments.

Police and Fire Commission

The Police and Fire Commission meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 23, at 5:00 p.m. in virtual format. Agenda items include a discussion of the Police Chief hiring process.

Native Garden/Lawn Conversion Event at Lussier Family Heritage Center Sunday, April 27th

Are you curious about replacing parts of your lawn with native plantings? Join Wild Ones Madison, Lussier Family Heritage Center, and Dane County Land & Water Resources for a Native Garden Learning Community Hub workshop on this topic next Sunday, April 27th at the Lussier Family Heritage Center. This monthly series features specialized topics related to native plant gardening, including garden preparation and design, planting for pollinators and other wildlife, native plant propagation, leave the leaves and other maintenance, seed collecting, and much more!

This month’s learning topic will focus on how to convert larger areas, such as a lawn or larger property, to native plants and how to make your existing lawn more pollinator friendly:

  • Lawn removal methods: comparison of different methods to remove turf grass
  • Planting and maintenance to minimize weeds
  • Pollinator lawns: plants that can be added to a lawn to make it more pollinator friendly
  • Terrace planting guidance
  • Determining your soil type
  • Seedling transplanting
  • Learning stations for garden design, a resources library, and an ideas-swap table

The event will start with a brief kick-off address from representatives of Dane County’s Land & Water Resources Department and Wild Ones Madison followed by time to visit topic stations and speak to garden design volunteers.

Cost: $5 per person (proceeds support environmental education and native plant programming). To request fee assistance, email sandford.susan@danecounty.gov.

Reminder: East MPD Coffee With a Cop Tuesday, April 22nd

From East District MPD:

Hello East Side!!!

Spring Has sprung (until the next surprise snowfall).  I'd like to cordially invite you to Coffee With A Cop next week.  It will be held on Tuesday, April 22nd, at 2PM.  We will be hosting it at our East District station (809 S. Thompson Dr).

Our special guests this month are Officer Haley Massey and Crisis Worker Hope Edgren.  PO Massey is the Mental Health Officer for the East District, and Hope is one of Journey Mental Health's Crisis Workers, who are embedded within MPD to provide guidance and assistance for calls and incidents where there is a mental health nexus.  They will be talking about MPD's Mental Health Unit, how we respond to mental health calls, and how the unit came to be.

Our Officers have found that the Mental Health Unit has been a great asset to how we serve our public, and after hearing their presentation, I hope that you will feel the same.

Please consider attending, if schedule allows!
