Project Information

Madison Parks is proposing to reconstruct the parking lot, entrance drive, and several walking paths in Hoyt Park.

Background:

Hoyt Park is located on Madison's West side and was developed in the 1930s. In 2018 the park was added to the National Register of Historic Places.  The parking lot and entrance drives were constructed in the early 1950s.

Project Needs:

The current asphalt pavement is in poor condition and is in need of replacement.  There are currently not pavement markings and none can be installed in the pavement's current condition. The curb is also in poor condition and encroaches on several of the mature oak trees surrounding the lot.  Drainage throughout the lot is in need of improvement.

The asphalt paths used to access the park shelter, restrooms, and other park areas are also in need of replacement and improvement to meet current accessibility guidelines.

Key Components:

The proposed project replaces the existing lot with a new configuration and several notable changes including:

  • Reduced asphalt area
  • Restoration of some asphalt area to grass
  • Maintenance of 26 parking stalls (approx 27 existing stalls)
  • Addition of concrete sidewalk pedestrian path connecting lot, playground, and restroom building
  • Relocation of curb to protect trees
  • Improvement and widening of path to shelter
  • Repaving pedestrian path from shelter to stone gate
  • Addition of bio-retention basin for stormwater treatment
  • Marking and signing of accessible stalls

Approximate Timeline:

  • Stakeholder and public engagement - April 2025
  • Public Meeting (TBD)- May 2025
  • Final design and permitting- Summer 2025
  • Bidding- Fall 2025
  • Construction- Spring 2026
