Emerald Ash Borer

The City of Madison is continuing with the treatment of ash trees as part Emerald Ash Borer plan of 2012.

We treat approximately 10,000 ash trees in the City of Madison on a multi-year cycle to protect them from the emerald ash borer.

Trees are injected with emamectin benzoate into their vascular system. They are not sprayed.

History

In late 2013, Madison confirmed Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) in an ash tree in the Warner Park area.  Most counties in Wisconsin have confirmed the presence of EAB.  There was a statewide quarantine placed to help to control its spread.

Urban Forestry staff inspected every ash tree within the City of Madison.  In following the EAB plan, they marked certain trees for removal that did not meet the criteria for treatment.

EAB in an Ash Tree on Your Property

If you think the tree on your private property is infested with EAB, we suggest consulting a certified arborist. EAB is 100% fatal to an untreated ash tree. You will need to decide to treat or remove the tree.  For more information on finding a certified arborist, visit Wisconsin Arborist Association.
