Safe Routes to School Plan
The City of Madison along with the Wisconsin Bike Fed and the Madison Metropolitan School District are working on a citywide Safe Routes to School Plan. Funding for this project is through the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternatives Program with additional funding from the US DOT’s Safe Streets and Roads for All Program.
Project Overview
Planning activities include:
- Safe Routes to School Framework Recommendations including:
- Policies and procedures that would support walking and biking to/from schools
- Expanding and improving education and encouragement programming
- School Specific Planning
- Support for approximately 7 schools to assess school needs, engage with school community, develop recommendations, and prioritize improvements.
- Each school will receive a final plan and traffic safety handout.
- Review of Unusually Hazardous Transportation locations
- Review needed infrastructure improvements that would allow these locations to be safe for students to walk and bike.
