Lead Service Line Inventory

Madison was the first major city in the country to launch a full Lead Service Replacement Program. Between 2000 and 2006, Madison Water Utility acted quickly and aggressively to remove lead service lines from its system. By 2012, all known lead service lines in the city – more than 8,000 in all – had been replaced with much safer copper.

Although a successful program, lead services are still occasionally found. Lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant people and young children. For this reason, it is important for property owners to determine if lead service lines exist within their property’s plumbing system.

Plumbing systems and water-related appliances within homes and businesses are the responsibility of the property owner. If you discover that your property has a lead water service, you may be eligible to receive a rebate of up to $3,000 to replace the lead pipes.

Madison Water Utility has collected pipe material data for service lines based on permit records, water main tap records, meter records, and maintenance, repair and replacement work. However, much of the service line pipe material data is based on the historic records and therefore can present minor inaccuracies.
