Meeting and Event Highlights for the Week of November 13, 2023

Congratulations! It was an honor to celebrate 60 years of civil rights efforts within the City of Madison with members of the Equal Opportunity Commission, the Department of Civil Rights, the mayor, my fellow Common Council colleagues, and community members. Thank you for your continual work in creating a safer and inclusive Madison.

Boards, Commissions, and Committee Meetings

Note: This is not a complete list of meetings for this upcoming week. All meetings and their details can be found here.

  • Finance Committee: The Finance Committee meeting will take place on Monday, November 13, 2023, in virtual format at 4:00 PM. Agenda items include the authorization of the issuance of up to $28.6 million of 20 year tax-exempt bonds to finance the State Street Campus Garage reconstruction project.
  • Plan Commission: The Plan Commission meeting will take place on Monday, November 13, 2023, in virtual format at 5:30 PM. Agenda items include adopting an amendment to the City of Madison Comprehensive Plan and development-related requests in Districts 1, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 16, 17, and 18.
  • Police and Fire Commission: The Police and Fire Commission meeting will take place on Monday, November 13, 2023, in virtual format at 5:30 PM. Agenda items include discussing the timing of candidate background checks relative to the Chiefs seeking approval for the eligibility list and hiring list, as well as various status updates from both the Fire Department and the Police Department.
  • Common Council: The Common Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, in hybrid format at 5:30 PM. Agenda items include the 2024 Executive Capital Budget, the 2024 Executive Operating Budget, and public comment.
  • Common Council: The Common Council meeting will take place on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, in hybrid format at 5:30 PM. Agenda items include items continued to this budget meeting if recessed to reconvene.
  • Common Council: The Common Council meeting will take place on Thursday, November 16, 2023, in Room 201 of the City-County Building at 210 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. at 5:30 PM, if needed. Agenda items include items continued to this budget meeting if recessed to reconvene.

Events

  • Share Your Ideas for Public Art in the West Area! West Area Arts Focus Group on November 13: Would you like to see more public art in the West Area? Interested residents are invited to attend a West Area Arts Focus Group on Monday, November 13, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Vel Phillips Memorial High School, 201 S. Gammon Rd., in the Wisconsin Room (enter the front doors facing Mineral Point Road, turn left down the hall, and left again into the Wisconsin Room, #1210). The focus group will include a facilitated discussion of arts in the West Area with area artists, neighbors, and City staff. We will discuss ideas shared so far, and how to make them a reality! People interested in sharing their opinion on arts in the West Area but unable to attend can fill out an accompanying survey. Focus group signup and the survey can be found here.
  • Yoga Core - Tuesday, November 14, 2023, and Friday, November 17, 2023Want to build your strength and increase body awareness? Yoga Core is a great way to do it! This class incorporates a wide variety of seated, standing, balancing, and mat-based yoga poses focusing on strength, stability, and mobility. Core-based practices can help enhance balance and stability and prevent falls and injuries as we age. All levels are welcome!
  • HUD-Approved Homebuyer Education - Saturday, November 18, 2023Take the first step to owning a home, and join us in this Home Buyer Education Workshop. This FREE HUD-Approved homebuyer education workshop takes place in person, and lunch is provided. 
  • Inspired by Wright: Tour & Art Making Experience - Saturday, November 18, 2023Tour the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center and discover how Wright saw geometric shapes in the world around him. You’ll learn how Monona Terrace’s unique landscape influenced his choice of geometry, expressed in nearly every aspect of the building. Then, use this newly gained knowledge and put together geometric forms to create your own Wright-inspired glass piece of art.
  • Mini Meditation Retreat - Sunday, November 19, 2023Relax, recharge, and reconnect at our upcoming Mini Meditation Retreat with Dr. Sarah Moore and co-facilitator, Alex Doll. This in-person retreat held in the Community Terrace will be a unique blend of guided meditation, breathing exercises, mindful movement, and deep relaxation with Yoga Nidra.
