More Post-Election Tips plus This Week's Updates
postedHi Everyone,
Following up on last week's post-election recovery tips, I've had several conversations with folks regarding healthy self-care. It appears many are making the choice to turn off the news for a while, or at least cut down, so as to broaden their focus and give themselves over to restorative activities, rejuvenating body and soul.
While eight years ago the response was historic marches, it seems as though folks are girding themselves up this time in a different manner. Resistance, in other words, can take many forms, and a respite from the whirlwind of the daily news cycle can be wise and necessary.
And, yes, getting outdoors is a good way to get back in balance. In addition to the list of parks I shared in last week's post, check out this cool Story Map of the Wingra Lake Loop, which highlights unique natural, historical, and cultural features around Lake Wingra. Phil Gaebler, stormwater resource engingeer in the City Engineering Department worked with the Greater Madison Metropolitan Planning Organization to put the story map together.
This is a byproduct of a volunteer effort called the Lake Wingra Heritage Plan working group. The group has been meeting for the last few years with close ties to Friends of Lake Wingra, another important local volunteer organization.
This dovetails nicely with my other focus in last week's post. Volunteer activity can help keep our self-care from becoming solipsistic and too self-absorbed. There are a lot of needs out there, and while strategic retreats are healthy from time to time, connecting with others and doing vital work in our community is another good way to get back in balance.
The November issue of Isthmus has a helpul Volunteer Guide, listing a bevy of local organizations that could use a helping hand. Consider reaching out. It just might do the trick to overcome the winter blahs and any lingering election hangover.
A pastor friend of mind says that gratitude is a superpower available to all of us. As we enter into this Thanksiving week, let us be full of it.
Here are this week's updates:
