May Activities at the Madison Senior Center

Older Americans Month is celebrated each year during the month of May. Named in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy as "Senior Citizens Month," Jimmy Carter changed the designation to its current name in 1980. Presidents and communities have issued proclamations for the past 49 years, honoring older adults and their many contributions to their communities. The 2012 slogan for the celebration is "never too old to play!" The Madison Senior Center joins the nation in acknowledging and honoring people 50 or older with three special events in May. The Madison Sixth Grade Essay Contest, featuring sixth graders reflecting on older friends and relatives, and the Artful Affair, an art show featuring artists 55+ are two events that underscore the value of older adults and their skills and talents. The "Antique and Collectible Appraisal Fair" happens on Sunday, May 6 from 11- 3 and this offers people the opportunity to find out what their treasures are worth. Call 266-6581 to register. Older Americans Month is an occasion to show appreciation and support for our seniors as they enrich our communities while having fun! Kick up your heels and go out and play!
